By Bradford Rogers -March 13, 2019169

We have a lot of fun here at How Not To Sail. But seriously, one thing you should not do is operate your boat drunk.

We all know folks that do it. Heck, we might even be one of those folks.

But the consequences are serious.

According to the US Coast Guard’s report, alcohol was the leading cause of fatal boating accidents.
Moreover, Boating Under the Influence is illegal in all 50 states, and as the US Coast Guard reminds us,

“The Coast Guard and every state have stringent penalties for violating BUI laws. Penalties can include large fines, suspension or revocation of boat operator privileges, and jail terms. The Coast Guard and the states cooperate fully in enforcement in order to remove impaired boat operators from the waters.”

Of course, with all the cool waterfront restaurants and bars available, it’s tempting to toss back a couple before motoring or sailing back to the marina.

But first of all…don’t. You read the previous part, right? Jail is bad. Losing your boat is bad. Dying (or killing somebody) is bad.

Okay, but let’s suppose you’ve had a couple. Maybe you’re on Spring Break and you don’t know better yet. (You will.)

At least take advantage of the breathalyzer machine that’s probably already in your favorite bar. And if your bar doesn’t have one yet, tell ’em to check out http://breathalyzerineverybar.com.

Like I said, we don’t take most things too seriously here at How Not To Sail. But BUI is no joke. So stay safe out there, folks!

ATLANTA, GA. – As reported online in a story published to indexjournal.com, the campaign “A Breathalyzer in Every Bar” encouraged safe driving practices during Super Bowl LIII, which was played in Atlanta, Georgia, on February 3. Super Bowl weekend is a popular time for drinking, and Atlanta patrons would have the opportunity to make sure they’re not over the limit before hitting the road.

In the Atlanta metro area, about 40 machines stand with the name Breathalyzer in Every Bar. Bars like Tony’s Sports Bar and Grill in Duluth, Georgia, and Crowne Sports Bar and Grill in Norcross, Georgia, have the machines ready for use. The machines allow bar-goers in the city to test their blood alcohol level before they leave an establishment.

“I always make it a point to use the machine any time we go to a bar that has a breathalyzer vending machine,” said patron Brittany Heggen. “It’s a fun way to keep myself in check. I think it creates awareness, which prompts people to talk about the laws pertaining to drinking and driving.”

Many people do not understand the amount of alcohol that can push someone beyond the legal limit of .08. Even if someone does not feel impaired, he or she could be slapped with a DUI or cause a wreck after having one too many drinks.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration calculated that one person in the U.S. died from a drunk driving accident every hour in 2015. On Super Bowl Sunday, and every day, the NHTSA promotes the campaign Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk, which encourages people to find safe, sober rides.

Prevent DUI’s With A Breathalyzer Before You Drive

ATLANTA, Jan. 31, 2019 /PRNewswire/ — This weekend is a perfect time to utilize safe driving techniques and think before you get behind the wheel. “A Breathalyzer in Every Bar” reminds the public to be safe and sober in order to prevent accidents and deaths.

Throughout Atlanta, there are approximately 40 Breathalyzer in Every Bar vending machines, including Crowne Sports Bar and Grill in Norcross, and Tony’s Sports Bar and Grill in Duluth. As a preventative tool, the machines allow patrons to test their breath alcohol levels to make sure they are able to drive home safely, especially this weekend during the Big Game when drinking and driving deaths increase.

“I always make it a point to use the machine any time we go to a bar that has a breathalyzer vending machine. It’s a fun way to keep myself in check. I think it creates awareness which prompts people to talk about the laws pertaining to drinking and driving,” says patron Brittany Heggen of Atlanta.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2015 on average one American was killed in a drunk driving crash every 51 minutes. Alcohol-impaired traffic fatalities often spike on holidays and popular drinking days, like “Super Bowl Sunday.” NHTSA’s Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk campaign encourages people to make plans ahead of time for a safe ride home from a party:
